Not exactly the wake-up call any parent wants to get! I am pretty steady in crisis, but blood was everywhere and the cut was in a tough spot. My husband was not with us, as we were visiting his parents out of town, so after I assessed the bleeding, I FaceTimed him to decide together if stitches were needed. We decided he didn’t need stitches, but as any good mother totally freaked out in the middle of the night, I wanted a second opinion. My father-in-law was a medic in the Air Force so after we called daddy, we went downstairs to wake up Papa and Nonnie.
We all got him cleaned up, calmed down, loved on, and prayed over. Two hours later everyone was finally calmed and asleep again. In the morning, we all found ourselves gathered in my in-laws walk-in closet to tell my sister-in-law the whole story, to which she responded, “Wait! I brought my homeopathic kit with me!” She proceeded to help with the swelling and pain.
Why did I just give every reader heart palpitations? Because I wanted to remind you of something so important. Crisis brings the helpers. Mr. Rogers first coined this phrase on his show:
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news. My mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
Pain brings pain, but it also brings comfort. When trouble comes, not only is God our ever present help, but that is when our tribe shows up and brings the concern, love, comfort, and help that we need.
If you are struggling today in life, in love, in recovery, in anything, let the helpers come. And if they are not naturally built in, go out and look for them. Reach out for help, let people know you are in need. It may feel very vulnerable, especially if you have had negative experiences before, but I hope you take the risk of getting help. All of my clients have heard me say, “I have never been able to accomplish anything truly wonderful in my life without help.”
We were never meant to do it alone, friends. And we don’t have to.
As always, if I can help you on your journey to food and body freedom in any way, it would be my greatest honor! Please feel free to contact me at www.bodyandsoulnutritioncounseling.com!
